2018 Season Wrap Up

2018-11-18

Season Wrap-Up. Lots of Thank You's. News for the 2019 season.

Dear East York Baseball Community,

The 2018 Baseball Season has come and gone, and we have to say it was a tremendous success. I could not be more impressed with our amazing community. You all put the kids first and made this an incredible season of baseball in East York.

Our season was capped of with our first ever hosting of an OBA Championship on Labour Day Weekend. It was an extraordinary honour to host these amazing 8-year olds in their first provincial championships. Thank you to everyone that was a part of that great weekend.

We have just wrapped up our 2018 season with our AGM on October 28th and the election of our new executive. The list of new executives can be found on the website. We are now busy getting things ready for the 2019 season. Here are a couple of concluding notes and some information about the upcoming season.

First and foremost, I would like to thank several people without whom the season would not run as smoothly.

To the VP's of House League, Select and Rep, thank you for ensuring that each of these programs ran smoothly. Thanks for your leadership.

To the Convenors, especially our newbies, without you our house league program could not go as smoothly as it does each year. Thanks for your dedication.

To our Treasurer, Nadia, thank you for keeping our payments and bills organized and our accounting up to date.

To all the coaches & managers, at every level, thank you for stepping up and helping to guide your young athletes and helping to make their season of baseball a memorable one.

To our service providers, without you, our organization would be missing something. Thanks to Monica and Mike, your smooth operating of the snack bar allows us to provide some of the best treats day in and day out to our community. Thank you Beverlee, we would not raise the unprecedented amount of sponsorship dollars that we do without you. Thanks to the Field Maintenance hero, Rafael, and his dad John, and well as others for helping with keeping our fields as playable even at the times it looked impossible.

To our Umpire Coordinator, Judy Collins, who scheduled umpires for over 700 games between house league, rep, select and tournaments. Amazing job.

Thanks to our Web & Social Media Administrator, and Scheduler, Jen Clarke, for keeping us updated and informed. As well to Bob Howes for updating all our scores online.

A shout out to Andrew Pace and Pace Baseball who ran an astounding summer camp program and who continues to run our off-season clinics. This is part of why the quality of baseball played at East York is improving each season.

Thank you to the rest of the executive for stepping up and stepping in when and where we needed you. Every little bit always helps.

As we prepare for the 2019 season, we want to update you on some happenings at the park and the great things that we have in store. We are also looking for more volunteers.

1. Rep Committee – This is an election year for individuals on the Rep Committee. The committee is made up of our President, VP of Rep & 5 members elected by the EYBA Executive and the Rep teams. Nominations for the rep committee will be accepted until Nov. 26th. Please send nominations, name and contact information, to 01coachmike@gmail.com. Individuals will be contacted to confirm their acceptance of the nomination. This is a 2-year commitment. Further information on voting will be provided to the Rep teams once nominations are complete.

2. New benches and areas for stands have been installed at Diamond 7. Thanks to the city for having these installed this fall. We look forward to continuing to work with the city on future improvements to various diamonds.

3. Registration Process - We are currently working on the website and will be providing details of registration there. There was a lot of learning with the new Goalline system this past season and we hope it will go just as smoothly this year. We will open registration to returning players first, and then to the remainder of our community.

4. Number of Teams for House League - Last year we saw a large surge in the number of people wanting to play baseball in our park, we anticipate the interest to stay at this level next season. As a result, we will be continuing the format where everyone will play 1 game a week. We will also be continuing with our early season skills sessions and adding weekend practice space for interested house league coaches / teams / players. We are also hoping to continue to be able to separate our Bantam and Midget divisions again this year.

5. Separate Birth Years in Jr. Rookie & Rookie – In the past number of seasons, we have divided the Jr. Rookie and Rookie divisions by Novice and Experienced after evaluating the kids during Spring Training. We have found that this separation largely falls along birth line and have decided to divide the Jr. Rookie and Rookie Divisions by birth years going forward. This will also assist parents whose children are playing more than one sport as they will know going into registration which day their child will play.
The Rookie division will be renamed as Minor Rookie (younger or first year Rookie) & Rookie (older and second year Rookie). This will match with the Rep program.
The Jr. Rookie division will be renamed as Mite (younger or first year Jr. Rookie) and Tyke (older and second year Jr. Rookie).

6. Service Providers – As we noted last year, several labour-intensive roles have been changed to become paid service providers. These providers will be in effect for 2-years (opposite years to the executive elections). We are entering the second year of their commitments in 2019. We look forward to working with our Treasurer, Nadia, our Snack Bar Coordinator, Monica, our Sponsorship Coordinator, Beverlee and our Field Maintenance Crew led by Rafael next season.

We have voted to add a new position to this group for 2019. This new position will be the General Manager of Operations. This position will be responsible for the extraordinary large number of volunteer hours that various volunteers have taken on in the past and consolidate efforts to respond to the many needs of our volunteers and our community. The person in this role will be directed by the president and will include, but is not limited to the following; registration, communications, scheduling both of games and umpires, social media and web administration. Interested persons should have a knowledgeable background with East York Baseball as well are strong technical and communications skills. Due to the access of private registrant information, a Police Check and references are required for this role.

For all of those interested in this position, your resume & proposal are due November 23rd, 2018. A decision will be made by December 1st, 2018 and all successful applicants will be notified by the selection committee. Please email your proposals to me, at 01coachmike@gmail.com. I am also available for any questions or for further clarification of the roles and responsibilities of the above positions.

7. Volunteers - Last but not least, we are still looking to add to our great volunteer group. We are still looking for a convener for our Peewee divisions as well as 2 Associate Convenors for the Tyke/Mite and Minor Rookie/Rookie Divisions. Associate Convenors will assist the convenors and learn the role, so they are able to pinch hit if the convenor is away as well as convene in the future if interested. If you are interested in joining our amazing group, please send me an email at 01coachmike@gmail.com

Thanks again to everyone, and we look forward to seeing you in the park next May.
